REDUCE OR STOP PAIN MEDICATIONS

Q: CAN YOU HELP ME REDUCE OR DISCONTINUE THE USE OF PAIN MEDICATIONS?

A: Yes!

We see many different situations in which people wish to reduce their dose or actually stop taking pain medications:

  FAQ MENU

  1. Some have difficulty with withdrawal symptoms when trying to stop using opioids, after having had successful treatment of their pain.
  2. At least one third of all patients on long term opioid medications notice only slight pain relief or intolerable side effects. They understandably ask if there is any value in taking medications that do not offer them significant pain relief or that actually cause them problems.
  3. Some have been on pain medications ever since the pain started and would like to see if their condition may have healed or improved and if they even need to use the medications anymore.
  4. Some are concerned about the long-term risks of the medications and want to stop taking them.
  5. Patients who have done a lot to help manage chronic pain, including improved fitness, weight or managing stress, commonly find that they need no medications, or a lot less, and are more energetic and clear headed without them.
  6. There are also many people who find that when they decrease the dose or completely stop the medications that the pain is about the same, not worse. At this point they often decide that they don’t want to deal with the side effects, risks and financial expense of the medications.

We can help you with an optimal speed of tapering off the medications and to comfortably manage withdrawal symptoms.

Please note that medications are only one of many options available to you in a comprehensive pain management clinic. It is very useful for us to perform a complete medical evaluation and to discuss with you the other treatments that should be considered.
