MEDICATION MANAGEMENT OVERVIEW   PATIENT PROGRAMS

A comprehensive pain management program offers a very wide range of treatments, each of which has its own role in improving pain and function. Medication management can be a part of a well planned approach to your care. Several different classes of medications may be considered, including opioids, acetaminophen, anti-inflammatory medications, anti-convulsants and antidepressants.

The use of opioid medications for chronic pain is controversial. It would seem to make sense that they should be helpful, since they are effective in treating cancer pain and acute post-surgical pain, yet their long term use in chronic pain is actually a much more complex issue. While some patients obtain improved pain and function, others instead develop worse pain, increased anxiety and depression and the medications worsen their ability to function. In addition, there is a nationwide epidemic of addiction and accidental deaths due to opioid pain medications. For your safety, it is important that we carefully determine if and in what manner might these medications be appropriate for your individual circumstances.

OUR PHILOSOPHY

Comprehensive, multi-disciplinary care is proven to be the most successful approach to management of both acute and chronic pain.

We diagnose specific painful structures whenever possible, providing interventional procedures that are likely to be successful in treating those conditions.

We work in partnership with our patients, and we encourage each patient’s input into their care.

We educate patients throughout the course of treatment, to better understand the causes of their pain, the treatments we offer, and each of our roles in achieving successful outcomes.

Chronic pain is a complex medical condition which can affect physical, mental, social and economic well-being of our patients and their loved ones. Thus, it is important that the management of chronic pain is multifaceted, utilizing many different treatment options, each of which is an important part of improving your pain, suffering, function and enjoyment of your life.

Best outcomes are obtained when patients are determined to actively participate in improving their own health, including improved fitness, sleep, and learning new skills that aid in the management of anxiety and stress. It is inspiring to observe when our patients have made important changes in these areas. Our patients are often astonished to look back and see how much of a difference these changes have made in improving their pain and function.

We offer hope for improved pain and restored function.
